Desertification : financial support for the biosphere
In 1977 the United Nations Conference on Desertification was held in Nairobi and produced a world plan of action to combat desertification based on the best scientific information. The plan considered that desertification, which was causing the world to lose some 6 million hectares of productive land every year, reducing the productivity of some 20 million hectares per year to a level of zero economic return, and menacing the life support systems of more than 800 million people, could be halted by the year 2000 if adequate resources were made available and invested in corrective measures. Later the UN General Assembly requested the preparation of a series of technical studies on among other things, ways of implementing global environmental programmes to combat desertification. With the intensification of this problem, it is timely that these expert studies are now published in this book
This book addresses the world problem of desertification. It presents the likely means for raising the additional resources needed to implement a worldwide programme to combat the problem.
