Negative ions
There is a need for information about negative ions, which play an important role in atomic and molecular physics, plasma chemistry and plasma physics, and in the development of gas lasers, gas discharge devices, and related areas.
This book presents a thorough discussion of negative ions and the elementary processes in which they participate. It revises and updates previous literature in the field, and explores a number of areas in which fundamentally new results have been obtained in recent years. For instance, extensive information on electron affinities has recently become available by studying photodetachment from negative ions under the influence of tunable laser beams. Modern techniques have also given the para- meters of autoionization states for many molec ular negative ions. Negative lons contains much new material which extends our know- ledge of the subject.
Dr. Smirnov thus provides an in-depth modern view of the physics of negative ions: basic properties, complex and unstable states, col- lisions between negative ions and atoms, the production of negative ions in gases, detach ment during collisions with charged particles, and interaction of negative ions with radiation.
