Quantum mechanics
This book is based on courses in quantum mechanics which the authors have taught for several years. An attempt has been made to emphasize the physical basis of the subject, but without undue neglect of its mathe matical aspects.
The early chapters of the book provide an introduction to the subject along essentially historical lines. Physical problems that led to the de velopment of quantum mechanics are described in Chapter 1, and the "old quantum theory" is outlined. In Chapter 2, the foundations of wave mechanics are laid in terms of the wave-particle duality; the Schrödinger equation for a free particle is presented, and the Born interpretation of the wave function is discussed. After a discussion of wave packets and the uncertainty principle in Chapter 3, forces are introduced into the wave equation, and the analogy between wave mechanics and opties is traced. The theory of the Schrödinger equation is discussed in Chapter 5, and selected one-dimensional problems are worked out.
Throughout the book, the role of symmetry operations and the essen- tially algebraic structure of quantum-mechanical theory are emphasized. Thorough treatments of selected physical systems are given in the text. A large number of problems has been provided, calling for additional applications of the theory and supplementing the textual material.
