Physics of the nucleus
Part I of the book consists of a discussion of the two-nucleon force and of those gross properties of nuclei which can be understood with only the simplest ideas of nuclear structure Part II explains the shell model, the individual particle model, and various collective motions. In this part, we also sketch the justification for these models of the nucleus, in terms of derivations from more fundamental theory, in this way, we are able to show that there is a unified picture of the nucleus, of which the different models are appropriate approximations. One aspect of this discussion, the comparison and consolidation of the optical model and the statistical model for states of high excitation, is postponed to the part on nuclear re- actions. Parts III, IV, and V respectively discuss electromagnetic proper- ties, radioactivity and nuclear reactions. In each case necessary background material is explained: multipole expansions and radiative transition rates, the beta-decay interaction, and the general formalism for describing reactions.
