Introduction to chemical engineering
This book has been written as a beginning engineering text. It is not intended for advanced students, nor have we attempted to give an all- inclusive treatment of the subjects we have selected.
The key to the book is the significance of the two adjectives in the first sentence. It is a beginning book, aimed at students who come to the unit operations for the first time. It assumes a working knowledge of chemistry (especially physical chemistry), physics as usually covered in a first-year university course, mathematics through the calculus, the fundamentals of thermodynamics, and an elementary knowledge of machine parts and con- struction. It asuthes that the student is ignorant of the particular equip ment to be described, the general theory of any of the unit operations, or the manufacturing processes in which these operations are used. It is an attempt to write an engineering text.
